Wielding a lightsaber, annihilating aliens or being chased by the police at 100MPH in a getaway Ferrari – fantasies we so far only experience by bashing controllers and staring at a flat TV.

 

But now Sony are poised to introduce technology many of us have been waiting for since the late 80s that will make the fun seem so much more real. Yes, a virtual reality headset is finally on its way.Known as 'Project Morpheus,' it will create a fully immersive experience, in which you feel present in a simulated, 3D world – achieved by a 1080p display, 1000Hz motion detection and positional head tracking.

 

As well as playing games without the distraction of your living furniture crowding your vision, Morpheus will also be used to offer other experiences. Sony is currently working with Nasa to show you what it's like to walk around Mars by using real images gathered from the Mars Rover.

 

Hold off from getting too excited yet, though – it's still in prototype form, and there's been no mention of a release date or price.
